Animal lovers have been saying it for years, but animals, especially pets, are people too! While this is usually meant as a joke, there are elements of truth in it. Many people consider their pet to be a member of the family, and especially for children, the companionship of a loved pet can be something they’ll remember and cherish forever.

Over the years, I've had many different kinds of pets-- dogs, cats, a bird, and even a pet rock (though that was a long time ago)! All these pets (except Mr. Rock), had one thing in common-- they are people too! Because they are people, there are some important things to keep in mind when deciding what type of pet to get. Do you have enough space for the pet you want? For example, it is generally not such a great idea to have a large dog in a small apartment. If you don't have an area on your property to walk your pet, then make sure you take your pet out for a walk every day and let it get the exercise it needs. Physical exercise is very important to an animal’s well being, both mental and physical.

Common sense is the key when training and owning any pet. Teaching your pet commands is very important, especially at a young age. The saying that "an old dog can't learn new tricks" does have some truth to it. If you would like to teach your pet how to get the paper for you in the morning, be sure to train it early! Many of us, at some point in our dog-owning life, are guilty unjustly trying to correct our pets our of frustration. A genuine challenge with any pet can be attempting to show your love for him or her at all times and avoid needless yelling or punishment. Take it from personal experience - pets are all about positive reinforcement!

A very important part of being a pet owner is making sure to have your pet visit the vet for health check-ups. Making sure your pet gets necessary injections will help ensure your pet a long healthy life! This not only benefits the pet’s health but yours and your families also if they are in close contact with the animal. To help with the cost of vet bills, several types of pet insurance are now being offered.

The things I've mentioned above are some important things I've learned from being a long-time pet owner. This site is meant to provide information regarding different facets of being a pet owner from my own experience. The most important thing to remember is to have fun with your pet!
