Top 5 Things to Consider in Choosing A Type of Pet

Pets are a wonderful addition to any household! In the United States, there are over 60 million dogs, 70 million cats, 6 million rabbits and 2 million birds that live in American homes. This statistic does not include the millions of other pets, such as fish, reptiles, small mammals and other “exotic” animals we keep as pets. With the number and variety of pets available to choose, it is important to choose the one that fits us and our lifestyle the best. Below I have included five important points to keep in mind when considering the type of pet to own or to add to your home.

1. Time Commitment

The first important consideration to keep in mind is the amount of time you have available to devote to your pet. Therefore, when considering any type of pet, take a careful look at your schedule. Looking at the amount of free time you have now or are willing to spend with your pet is an important decision for what type of pet you would like to own. If you work very long days and have many other commitments, a pet that needs a lot of personal attention and interaction shouldn’t be your first choice. What activities, if any, are you willing to give up to spend time with your pet for relaxation, for exercising, for training, for cage cleaning, etc.? Making a list of the commitments you have and taking a realistic look at your schedule should offer you some insight into how much time you can devote to a pet.

2. Available Space

Make a good examination of your surroundings. Do you think that the pet you would like to own would really fit in? An obvious example is if you own an apartment, owning a horse or a large dog might be a significant challenge unless you are willing to pay for boarding, etc. However, just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t have a large breed dog. Look for breeds that can adapt to the space and are more docile. Also consider the necessary space for pet items such as dishes, crates, and an area for the pet to sleep.

3. Financial Resources

The initial purchase of the pet is just the first outlay of cash. In many ways, it is actually one of the least expensive costs involved in owning a pet. Your pet will need the basic supplies like bedding/cage, food, food dispensers and a “wellness” check with your veterinarian (in most cases). Ongoing costs include food, vet care, and any pet medication that may be required. It's important that pets get their wellness checkups at a qualified veterinarian annually. If you are on a limited budget, examining how much you can spend per month on your pet and save for those emergency needs.

4. Family

This might seem like one of the first concerns to consider, but, if you have taken the time to carefully consider the first points, then the rest of the items on the list should be easy enough. How do you feel that your pet would really fit into your family? If you are single, do you have someone who would take care of the pet if you are frequently away, have other commitments, or are ill? Would you be able to afford a pet sitter? What types of allergies or health concerns does your family members or yourself have? Are any of your family members afraid or uncomfortable with any particular animals? Will it be a welcome addition or too difficult of a burden?

5. Legal Ability to Own It

After carefully considering the other points, you have finally chosen the specific type of pet you would like to own. Is it legal to own this type of pet where you live? If you are looking at a dog or cat, you might not have too much to worry about unless you rent or live in an apartment. But, if you are looking at an “exotic” pet – even a particular type of bird or a hedgehog – can you legally own it in your state/city/county? Certain types of birds are illegal in parts of the midwest or there are local ordinances against certain types of pets. Likewise, you cannot own a hedgehog in Denver. Dogs that are labeled “aggressive” breeds may also present some legal challenges and you should consider this carefully before choosing your breed of dog for a pet.
