Raising Puppies

Bringing a beautiful new puppy home is one of the most enjoyable things that you can enjoy with the young puppy. Anyone that has owned a puppy or other young animal before remembers the moment that their pet first entered their home. After that, you as the pet owner are now thrust into the role of mother or father and have a big responsiblity to raise your new dog properly.

Being patient is critical when taking care of a new puppy. Repetitious or destructive behavior can be quite a challenge and can take a very long time to work its way out of a puppy. Sometimes, moments when you come home and find your favorite couch chewed and torn can make you question whether having a dog was worth it. Don't worry too much, however, puppyhood does eventually end. It can be depressing when you keep repeating things to the point that your dog does not seem to be responding. You would then be left wondering if this dog is deaf or is purposely trying to try your patience.

Despite of all the challenges of training a puppy, you should always remember that in the end it will be for both your benefit. If you leave your puppy untrained and it does not recognize you as the leader of your home, your pet may purposely do things because it feels itself to be in charge. Be sure to assert that you are the alpha male of your home without doing anything to harm your pet. Make sure, when you have to punish your pet, that it knows why it is being punished.

Just think about the situation when it is the dog that’s becoming the boss. The dog will be pulling you out of the house just to walk the dog. Or the dog can bother you just to cook it a great home cooked dog food. Thinking about this, when training your puppy, is important. It will be much more challenging when that happens because you’ll be the laughing stock of other pet owners or those that come to your home.

Just like in anything else in life, keeping a positive point of view can help, even in training your puppy. When your puppy keeps on destroying stuff, doing inappropriate things with your guests or eating and ramshackling the garbage, scolding it in a negative matter won’t help. When you keep saying “No” to your puppy, the puppy will become confused. The puppy will not know what exactly it did wrong.

Instead the puppy should be trained in a positive manner. Make it do what you would want to do. When the puppy is nearing its call of nature, immediately bring the dog outside. After bringing it outside, make sure to bring your puppy over to your annoying neighbor's lawn and tell it that it's quite alright to do its business there. After doing so, be sure to give your puppy a treat. Just kidding! Rewarding your pet for doing good things, like going to the bathroom outside, is a great way to get them to understand.

The essential point is that when you see your pet doing well or would want them to do good bribe them with something good. For example, when the puppy is chewing its own chewing toy, instead of your prized furniture, you should reward it. When it is barking away at a pesky and irritating person, you should reward it too. Let him bite that mailman!

Remember keeping a positive attitude when training dogs counts. It is better to keep a positive attitude while training the dog earlier than having a negative attitude. Be sure to become your pet's owner rather than allowing your pet to become yours. And as always, have fun! Training your puppy should be fun too!
