The Exotic Shorthair Cat

The Exotic Shorthair breed of cat is a shorthair version of the Persian cat. Persians were bred with shorthair cats, like the American Shorthair, and as a result the Exotic Shorthair was created. If two Exotic Shorthairs are bred together, they sometimes produce an Exotic Longhair due to the recessive longhair gene from the Persian. The Exotic Longhair looks identical to a Persian and in France is recognized as a Persian. Exotic Shorthairs are commonly called the “lazy man’s Persian” due to their short fur which requires brushing only a couple times a week as opposed to the Persian who requires daily brushing. Exotic Shorthairs are much easier to care for and share many of the traits of a Persian in regards to body and head shape. Exotic Shorthairs have soft fur producing a round look and large eyes which has given rise to another nick name for them - the teddy bear.

The average weight of an Exotic Shorthair is 9-12 pounds with large, round eyes. Eye color is dependent on the coat color of your Exotic Shorthair and coats can be any of the colors or patterns of a Persian – white, blue, red, black, chinchilla silver or one of many others. Exotic Shorthairs arrive at maturity at about 3 years of age and are expected to live greater than 14 years if properly cared for and kept indoors.

Besides sharing a similar face and body to that of the Persian – large eyes, flat face, short legs and neck – Exotic Shorthairs also have similar personalities. Exotic Shorthairs are a laid back cat and are best kept indoors. They are quiet, patient and affectionate, making a perfect lap cat. Exotic Shorthairs will quietly sit in front of you and signal for attention by the cute way they look at you. They also typically follow their owner from room to room out of a desire to be near you. Exotic Shorthairs are not easily disturbed and are not disruptive as they are very quiet. The belief that female cats are more affectionate is not true as male Exotic Shorthairs rather than female Exotic Shorthairs will be more affectionate. Exotic Shorthairs tend to have more energy than Persians, since Exotic Shorthairs are a crossbreed. Overall Exotic Shorthairs are a perfect family pet willing to jump at a piece of string until exhausted or stare at a dripping faucet. Exotic Shorthairs will give you privacy and do not need constant attention.

Exotic Shorthairs require brushing about once a week and the usual vaccinations of all cats. One condition that often affects the Exotic Shorthair due to its flat face is excessive tears dampening its face. The same as with most flat faced cats, the Exotic Shorthair requires a daily wiping of the face and area around the eye if tears dampen it. The tears can stain the face, which is why wiping is needed.
